[...] The deceased man, who emigrated from Portugal in the 1970s and his wife, who came from Finland, had been out eating in a restaurant on the day he was killed, according to Aftonbladet. On the way home, they were threatened by a group of youths, prompting the man to get a knife. He was later shot by police in his apartment, according to the newspaper.
(Rioting linked to police shooting continues outside Stockholm, The Washington Post, 23 maggio 2013)

  • Swedishness must be split from being white (Christina Zedell / Willy Viitala / Leif Magnusson / Tobias Hübinette, Newsmill via The Local - Sweden, 2 maggio 2013 - 21 maggio 2013):

Why is it that the notion lives on about what a Swedish appearance looks like? The radio programme Studio 1 asked this question in March during a debate about racism in Sweden today. The question of Swedishness is a loaded one and the debate heats up when race becomes an ever-more central concept in order to understand racist practices in every-day life in Sweden.

Our thoughts and our actions are affected by history and by society's structures and norms. Society and its different shapes existed before each and every one of us alive today were born. In other words, we are born into a web of thought patterns and values that influence how we treat and regard each other and ourselves. We are quite simply greatly affected by structural power hierarchies that came about during a period in history marked by racism and colonialism. Of course there is development over time, but when it comes to norms and stereotypes it takes a long time.

Swedes do not stand apart from the world and its history of racism and colonialism. Our way of dealing with this has so far been to deny that race exists, while we have also wanted to affirm the unknown and the new. Most Swedes will claim they are colour blind, and only see a human before them when they meet someone new. This denial risks hiding from view the discrimination and the segregation that is so tangible and evident for the many who are not seen as Swedes, and whose stories make up a painful testament to the state of things in Sweden.

Several articles and debates have recently criticized Multicultural Centre's exhibition Warning For Race and our anthology Race And Whiteness In Contemporary Sweden. We have read twenty-odd texts that object to our choice to use the term race. We know that the word race is taboo today, but at the same time it is related to a history that we still have not managed to come to terms with.

Critics say we are trying "fight fire with fire", as a Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) editorial writer put it, or they say speaking about race doesn't lead anywhere in attempts to understand today's Sweden. What the criticisms has in common is that they strongly argue for how things should be - that race should not have any significance in today's Sweden - instead of looking at what they actually look like.

That is why we argue that Sweden needs a non-colour-blind anti-racism that enables an understanding of the thought structures behind today's exclusive Swedishness. That is what we are trying to talk about and what we intend the exhibition Warning For Race to contribute to.

Like most other people, we do not believe that separating people into race would solve any social problems. But if certain groups of people with similar backgrounds are found over and over in the lower tiers of the statistics tables, then there is a reason to seek out knowledge about it and try to understand what the consequences are.

The reason Multicultural Centre raises the concept of race is because we still think race is an active category in Sweden, or, as we say in the exhibit, "race is still done" all the time in today's Sweden even though the concept itself has been discarded by science and politics alike.

We still separate people based on what they look like. Not always and not everywhere, but it is happening all the more often and in particular in relation to who is regarded as being Swedish or not. It happens in the media, it happens in culture.

There is even solid empirical research about Swedish every-day racism that has chronicled the experiences of non-white Swedes. It does not make for fun reading.

For the past 15 years, we at Multicultural Centre have studied and worked with the phenomenon of every-day racism in an educational manner. From there, we have concluded that we need to speak about race, instead of just contenting ourselves with analyses of ethnicity, meetings between cultures, and general xenophobia.

Despite most Swedes today distancing themselves from racism, we still meet stereotypical images and descriptions of non-white minorities and non-Western cultures in contemporary Swedish culture. Comparatively, Sweden has established some of the strongest laws against discrimination, and therefore gets top grades in the Migrant Integration Policy Index for creating the best preconditions for integration of new citizens. This isn't what needs improving.

We see a segmented labour market, and we see housing segregation - even when we compare with other countries that are much more cautious towards people who are not seen to belong to the majority population.

Taken together, this should prompt us to pause for reflection.

We want a new Swedish story better equipped to deal with and include today's demographic diversity and to create a new Swedishness for the future. That new story's main task is to separate whiteness from Swedishness in order to be a socially sustainable future Swedishness.

To find our way to that story, we think we must make visible the suppression and discrimination based on appearance, which we do in the exhibit and in the anthology. Let us not pretend that Sweden and Swedes stand apart from the world, history and the racial thinking and the norm of whiteness that still live on both in other countries and in our own society.

  • Discrimination unit heads to Stockholm suburbs (The Local - Sweden, 10 giugno 2013):

The government has ordered Sweden's Equality Ombudsman (Diskrimineringsombudsmannen, DO), the country's primary arbiter of discrimination claims, to relocate its offices to a north Stockholm suburb with a high concentration of immigrants.

The request was revealed on Monday in an opinion article by Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag of the Liberal Party (Folkpartiet), in which he explained that the government wanted the ombudsman's offices moved to either Tensta or Rinkeby, two districts northwest of central Stockholm with large populations of residents with foreign backgrounds.

"This has important value as a signal that society's institutions are present where people feel they are furthest from society," Ullenhag wrote in the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

He added that the moving the ombudsman's roughly 100 employees to the Stockholm suburbs would help "lift the most vulnerable parts of the city" and create employment opportunities.

"The decision is intended to break a negative spiral of flight from an area where there is widespread social exclusion," the minister added.

According to Ullenhag, the relocation of the Equality Ombudsman is taking place alongside a larger move by the city of Stockholm to relocate roughly 1,500 jobs within the city's administrative offices to the outer-regions of the Swedish capital.

However, Stockholm University professor Eskil Wadensjö, an expert in macroeconomics, immigration, and integration, said it was hard to know whether the move would have any positive effects in neighbourhoods plagued by social exclusion.

"You don't know until you've evaluated it, but it probably won't lead to any change in recruitment of those who are employed by the Equality Ombudsman," he told the TT news agency.

Previous studies have shown that providing Sweden's main employment office, Arbetsförmedlingen, with additional resources to assist foreign-born job seekers has had an effect on integration, and Wadensjö admitted that moving the ombudsman might also help, despite it never having been examined previously.

"It's a relatively small agency, so I don't think it will have much of an effect. But it's an interesting experiment and will be interesting to follow up on in a few years to see what has happened; to see if there is any local recruitment," he told TT.

"If nothing else, it has signal value; it shows that they care about these suburbs."

  • No review for hand-shake discrimination case (The Local - Sweden, 18 giugno 2013):

The Swedish Justice Ombudsman will not look at a case in western Sweden where a man was paid damages for not being given an internship after he refused to shake a female boss's hand for religious reasons.

The internship candidate himself had turned the case over to Sweden's Equality Ombudsman (Diskrimineringsombudsmannen - DO), but Trollhättan municipality managed to avoid a probe by paying him 30,000 kronor ($4,500).

The case has received widespread attention, however, with the municipality since receiving about 100 critical emails, reported the Ttela news site. The case was also reported to the Justice Ombudsman (Justitieombudsmannen - JO), but the agency has now decided not to review it.

The incident stemmed from an office visit by a man who had been offered an internship with the integration division at Trollhättan municipality.

When the man was set to meet a female supervisor at the office, he refused to shake her hand, explaining his religion forbade him from shaking hands with women unless he washed his hands directly afterwards.

The female supervisor then reportedly told the man that he could not intern at the office if he was not comfortable shaking everybody's hand. She also allegedly added that the office had hand sanitizer that he could use.

While the incident was later reported to the Equality Ombudsman, the national office that investigates suspected cases of discrimination, the case was settled before the ombudsman began its investigation, with Trollhättan municipality choosing to pay damages to the man.

"By law, a person who feels they've been disadvantaged because of their religion has a right to damages. We made a mistake, we took responsibility for it, and the person was compensated," municipal spokesman Said Niklund told the TTELA newspaper.

Last month, it was reported that the incident had had repercussions at the workplace, damaging the morale among the staff at Trollhättan's integration division.

  • Extreme-right sites beat political party pages (The Local - Sweden, 19 giugno 2013):

Far-right websites in Sweden are receiving so much traffic they are seven times more popular than the established political parties' online portals.

The seven most popular far-right websites attract a total of 145,000 unique visitors a day, according to the report, which was prepared by the government-run Swedish Media Council and handed to the government on Tuesday.

"I'm surprised to find out that (the sites) have seven times more visitors than the total of all parties in parliament," Ulf Dahlquist, the council's research director, told Sveriges Radio (SR).

Three sites have more visitors each than all parliamentary parties combined, including realisten.se, run by the Neo-Nazi Party of the Swedes.

The report, which described websites advocating violence, did not give any figures for visits to the websites of political parties in parliament.

It noted that the extreme left did not enjoy a similar level of popularity, with the two top sites attracting a total of just 3,620 unique visitors a day. Islamist websites are even more marginalized with only about 500 unique visitors each day, according to the report.

Swedish European Affairs Minister Birgitta Ohlsson told SR the finding had to "be taken very seriously".

"You can never completely immunize a society against anti-democratic and extremist groups that favour violent action. But it's possible to take a large number of initiatives," she said.

Realisten.se denied advocating violence, arguing that the report ought to make the parties in parliament reflect on "their inability to set up popular websites."
